About This Event
The 400m Individual Medley requires swimmers to complete two lengths each of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. It is the pinnacle test of complete swimming ability, demanding power, endurance, and technical mastery across all four strokes. The breaststroke leg — the third stroke — is typically where races are decided, as it is the slowest and most technique-dependent.

Heats determine the 8 finalists directly. The gold medal race covers 400 metres across all four strokes in sequence (100m each). Pacing across eight full lengths is crucial to a fast final time.
