About This Event
Kayak Slalom (K1) requires athletes to navigate a series of hanging gates on a fast-flowing artificial whitewater course in the shortest time possible. The paddler sits in a closed-cockpit kayak and uses a double-bladed paddle. Green-white gates must be taken in the downstream direction; red-white gates must be taken upstream against the current. Time penalties (50 seconds per missed gate, 2 seconds per touched gate) are added to the elapsed time.
Format
Two runs in the heats determine qualifiers for the final. In the final, each paddler completes one run of the course. The athlete with the lowest total time including penalties wins gold. The course is designed to test technical skill, strength, and composure under pressure.
Nations to Watch
Japan has strong domestic whitewater infrastructure and produces competitive slalom kayakers. South Korea and China also field strong men’s K1 slalom paddlers. The sport has growing participation across Southeast and Central Asia.
