About This Event
The Pommel Horse is widely considered the most technically demanding apparatus in men’s gymnastics. Athletes perform continuous circular and pendular swings using all parts of the apparatus — the pommel handles and the horse body — without pausing or stopping. The routine requires exceptional coordination, shoulder strength, and body control. Even small errors can cascade into costly falls.
Format
The 8 top qualifiers on pommel horse (maximum 2 per country) contest the apparatus final. Each performs a routine scored on difficulty (D-score) and execution (E-score), minus deductions for wobbles, breaks in swing, and falls. The highest combined score wins gold.
Nations to Watch
China has a long tradition of excellence on pommel horse. Japan and South Korea also produce elite-level pommel horse specialists. Gymnasts from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have also reached podium positions in this apparatus at major Asian competitions.
