About This Event
The Still Rings apparatus hangs 2.8 metres above the floor, and gymnasts must perform swings, strength holds, and a dismount while keeping the rings as still as possible — any ring movement is penalised. Signature elements include the Iron Cross, Maltese Cross, and Swallow positions, requiring extraordinary upper-body and core strength. The rings are the premier strength event in gymnastics.
Format
The 8 top qualifiers on rings (maximum 2 per country) contest the final. Each performs a routine judged on difficulty and execution. Excessive ring movement is deducted from the execution score. The gymnast achieving the highest combined score wins gold.
Nations to Watch
China produces world-class rings gymnasts known for exceptional strength. Japan also fields competitive rings specialists. South Korea and several Southeast Asian nations — particularly Indonesia and Philippines — have produced strong rings gymnasts who have reached podium positions at the Asian Games.
