About This Event
The Coxless Four (4-) features four rowers each using a single sweep oar on alternating sides without a coxswain. One athlete — typically the stroke — must steer the boat using foot-controlled rudders while rowing at full intensity. The combination of individual power and team synchronisation over 2000 metres makes this a classic and prestigious rowing event.
Format
Heats and repechages determine the finalists. Six four-person crews race 2000 metres in the final. Coxless fours must maintain a straight course without a dedicated steerer — deviations from the ideal racing line add distance and slow the final time.
Nations to Watch
China and South Korea field strong coxless four crews at the Asian Games. Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have developed competitive team rowing across multiple boat classes. Japan’s growing rowing infrastructure is also producing increasingly capable four-person crews.
