About This Event
Keirin originated in Japan in 1948 as a betting sport and was adopted into the Olympic programme. In competition, 6-7 riders follow a motorised pacer (derny) that gradually accelerates before pulling off the track with 2.5 laps remaining, releasing the riders for a pure sprint to the finish. Riders jockey for position behind the pacer and must make their decisive move when it leaves.
Format
Heats of 6-7 riders progress through rounds. In each heat, riders follow the motorised pacer for the first 4 laps before the pacer exits, leaving 2.5 laps of free racing. The first riders across the finish line in the final win the medals. Physical contact and tactical blocking within rules are permitted.
Nations to Watch
Japan has a deep Keirin tradition, with a professional domestic Keirin circuit producing world-class sprinters. South Korea also excels in this event. China and other nations field competitive Keirin riders, but Japan’s domestic professional system gives their athletes a unique competitive edge.
