About This Event
The Sprint is the most tactical and explosive event in track cycling. Two riders race over 3 laps (750m) of the velodrome, often beginning with a slow tactical standoff before unleashing maximum speed in the final 200 metres — timed separately. Riders jockey for position to avoid leading into the final straight, where slipstreaming can give the chasing rider a significant speed advantage.
Format
Qualifying rounds determine seedings. Knock-out matches of 2 riders progress through quarterfinals, semifinals, and a gold medal final. The best of three races determines each match winner. The rider crossing the line first in the decisive race wins the round.

South Korea and Japan have produced outstanding track sprinters with world-class top speeds. China also fields powerful sprinters. The event requires both tactical intelligence and explosive speed in the final 200 metres, rewarding those who combine both qualities.
