About This Event
Triathlon combines a 1500m open-water swim, 40km road bicycle ride, and 10km run in continuous sequence. Athletes transition directly between disciplines without stopping — the speed of transitions (T1: swim to bike; T2: bike to run) can decide close races. The event rewards complete athletes who excel across all three disciplines and manage fatigue through the transitions.
Format
All athletes start the swim simultaneously. After the swim, they transition to cycling at T1, then to running at T2. The first athlete to cross the finish line of the 10km run wins gold. Drafting is permitted in the swim but regulations govern its use in cycling.
Nations to Watch
Japan has strong triathlon infrastructure with many professional athletes. South Korea and China also field competitive triathletes. Australia-trained Asian triathletes have raised standards regionally. Kazakhstan and Hong Kong have also produced strong triathletes who challenge for Asian Games medals.
