About This Event
Individual Rhythmic Gymnastics combines dance, acrobatics, and apparatus manipulation in one of sport’s most elegant disciplines. Gymnasts perform routines with four different hand apparatus — the hoop, ball, clubs, and ribbon — each set to music. The routines must seamlessly blend body difficulties (leaps, pivots, flexibility) with apparatus mastery and expressive performance.
Format
Qualification determines finalists from multiple apparatus routines. The all-around final requires gymnasts to perform all four apparatus routines, with the combined score determining the overall champion. The gymnast with the highest total across all four routines wins the all-around gold medal.
Nations to Watch
China, Japan, and South Korea have the strongest rhythmic gymnastics programmes in Asia. Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan also field talented gymnasts in this discipline. The sport has been growing across Central and Southeast Asia, with more nations developing competitive programmes at the regional level.
