About This Event
The 100m Butterfly combines the visual drama of the butterfly stroke with explosive sprint speed over 2 lengths of the pool. Swimmers must execute simultaneous overhead arm recovery and dolphin kick at maximum intensity, making this one of the most physically demanding sprint events in swimming. The finish is always thrilling as swimmers push through fatigue in the final metres.
Format
Heats and semifinals select the 8 fastest women for the gold medal final. The swimmer completing 100 metres butterfly in the shortest time with legal stroke technique wins. Centre lanes are awarded to the fastest qualifiers.
Nations to Watch
China and Japan dominate women’s butterfly events at the Asian Games. Hong Kong and South Korea have fielded strong 100m butterfly competitors. Singapore and Chinese Taipei also regularly produce competitive women butterfly swimmers at the Asian Games.
