About This Event
The 50m Freestyle is the ultimate sprint — a single length of the pool at maximum speed with no turns. The race is often decided by reaction time off the blocks and underwater dolphin kicks. Everything happens in under 25 seconds at the elite level, making it one of the most electrifying events in aquatics.
Format
Heats and semifinals select the 8 fastest women for the gold medal race. The swimmer completing 50 metres freestyle in the shortest time wins. With such a brief race, the start and underwater phase are critically important.
Nations to Watch
China has produced dominant women’s sprint freestyle swimmers at the Asian Games. Japan and South Korea are consistent competitors. Singapore and Hong Kong have also produced competitive female sprint swimmers who challenge for Asian Games medals.
