About This Event
The Balance Beam is one of gymnastics’ most demanding events — a 500cm long, 10cm wide beam on which gymnasts perform a 70-90 second routine at 125cm height. The routine must include acrobatic series, leaps, turns, and a dismount — all performed on a surface barely wider than a foot. Falls are common even at the elite level, and mental composure is as important as physical skill.
Format
The 8 top qualifiers on balance beam (maximum 2 per country) contest the apparatus final. Each performs a complete routine judged on difficulty and execution, with falls deducted 0.8 points each. The gymnast combining the most complex routine with the cleanest execution wins the gold medal.
