About This Event
The Laser Radial (ILCA 6) is the women’s equivalent of the Laser, using a smaller sail on the same hull. The radial rig suits a lighter sailor and is the premier women’s Olympic singlehanded class. Racing demands tactical awareness, physical fitness, and skilled boat-handling across the fleet racing format. Wind knowledge and the ability to read shifting conditions are the decisive skills.
Format
10 fleet races over the regatta period accumulate points, with one discard allowed. A medal race involving the top 10 sailors determines final standings with double points. Lowest total score wins gold. The medal race creates a dramatic finale where the overall winner can change between any of the final positions.
Nations to Watch
South Korea, Japan, and China have the strongest women’s Laser Radial programmes in Asia. Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, and Thailand have also produced medal-contending women’s Laser sailors. The broader Asian sailing community is developing rapidly, increasing the competition depth across all sailing classes.
