About This Event
Women’s Modern Pentathlon follows the same format as the men’s event — épée fencing, 200m freestyle swimming, equestrian show jumping on an unfamiliar horse drawn by lottery, and a combined laser-run finale of 3.2km with four shooting stages. The discipline tests the complete athlete across sports that share almost nothing in common, requiring versatility rarely demanded by any other event.
Format
Each discipline scores points or converts to time bonuses. Final standings after fencing, swimming, and equestrian determine laser-run start gaps. First woman to finish the laser-run wins gold. A single poor discipline can be overcome if the laser-run is executed superbly.
Nations to Watch
South Korea has produced strong women’s Modern Pentathlon performers at the Asian Games. China and Japan also field competitive women pentathletes. Kazakhstan and Chinese Taipei have also contributed athletes who reach final positions at major Modern Pentathlon competitions in Asia.
