Indonesia’s Surfing Program
Indonesia is one of Asia’s leading surfing nations. With coastlines across thousands of islands — including world-famous breaks in Bali, Mentawai, and Lombok — the country produces surfers who compete at ISA World Surfing Games and the WSL Championship Tour. Surfing made its Asian Games debut at Hangzhou 2022, and Indonesia finished as a genuine medal contender. At Asian Games 2026, the Indonesian team is selected through national trials run by PSOI (Persatuan Selancar Ombak Indonesia).

Scoring System
Surfing is judged on a 10-point scale per wave. Each surfer rides multiple waves during a 20–25 minute heat, and their two best-scoring waves are combined for a heat total. Judges score each wave based on commitment, degree of difficulty, progressive maneuvers, speed, power, and flow. The system rewards surfers who take on more difficult, high-risk turns rather than safe, conservative riding.
Key Factors for Indonesian Success
Indonesia’s surfers develop in powerful reef and beach break conditions that demand advanced technique. This exposure to high-consequence waves builds the aggressive, committed surfing style that judges reward at competition level. Indonesian surfers also compete on the WSL Challenger Series, giving them competition-level experience against the world’s best outside of Asian Games cycles.
Regional Competition
Japan, as host nation, has a strong competitive surfing scene. Kanoa Igarashi is Japan’s most recognized competitive surfer, though his participation in the Asian Games depends on tour scheduling. The Philippines and Sri Lanka also field competitive surfers. The choice of venue will be a significant factor — Indonesian surfers are typically more comfortable in punchy, powerful beach break conditions than in mushy or small surf.
Venue
The surfing venue for Asian Games 2026 has not been formally confirmed at the time of writing. Japan’s established surf competition venues include Chiba’s Tsurigasaki Surfing Beach, which hosted Tokyo 2020 Olympic surfing, and coastlines in Shizuoka and Kanagawa prefectures. OCA will select a venue offering consistent conditions across the competition schedule.
