Skateboarding made its Asian Games debut at Hangzhou 2022, following its inclusion at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The discipline has two events at the Games: Street and Park (also called Transition). Japan has been Asia’s strongest nation in both formats, with its deep pool of young skaters producing medal results at every major international competition since 2018.
At Asian Games 2026, both men’s and women’s events are contested in each discipline, making four skateboarding events in total.
Street vs Park: What Each Discipline Involves
Street skating takes place on a replica urban landscape — stairs, rails, ledges, benches, and hubbas. Skaters perform tricks on and over these obstacles. Run scores and individual trick scores are combined for the final result. Park skating uses a complex concrete bowl with varying depths and coping edges. Skaters generate speed by carving the bowl and launch into the air off the coping to perform aerial tricks. Park rewards bigger airs and higher amplitude.
Japan’s Dominance and Asia’s Challengers
Japan’s national skateboarding programme, backed by significant grassroots infrastructure, has produced multiple world-ranked athletes in both disciplines. Yuto Horigome (Street) and Sora Shirai (Park) represent the male template; Momiji Nishiya and Hinna Kamiyama the women’s pipeline. China, South Korea, and the Philippines have invested in skateboarding infrastructure since the 2020 Olympics and are producing competitive junior athletes who will be senior competitors by 2026.
