South Korea’s archery programme is the most dominant single-nation programme in any individual sport at the Asian Games. Korean archers have won 27 of the 30 available individual Olympic archery golds since women’s recurve was added in 1984 — a concentration of excellence that has no parallel in global sport. At the Asian Games, South Korea has won gold in every recurve event at virtually every edition.

Recurve and Compound Events

Asian Games archery includes both recurve (Olympic format) and compound (higher-tech bow with a mechanical release aid) events for men and women. South Korea’s world-class depth is specifically in recurve; compound archery is less dominated, with India and Chinese Taipei winning compound golds at some Asian Games editions. Team events — where three archers shoot cumulatively — are also contested alongside individual rounds.

Why South Korea Dominates

South Korean archery operates a rigorous national selection system driven by fierce domestic competition. Qualifying for the national team is harder than winning the Olympic gold — at least six world-class archers compete for three national team spots in each gender. This internal pressure produces athletes who perform under stress better than any rival nation. The Korea Archery Association (KAA) also funds the longest training camps, most international competition exposure, and dedicated sports psychology support of any archery programme in the world.

Im Dong-hyun, who set multiple world records and won gold at both London 2012 and Rio 2016, represents the historical depth of Korean archery. The current generation includes Lim Si-hyeon, who won the Paris 2024 Olympic women’s recurve gold and individual title, and An San, who won three Olympic golds at Tokyo 2020.
