About This Event
The 200m Individual Medley requires swimmers to complete one length each of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle in succession. It is the definitive test of all-round swimming ability, demanding proficiency across all four strokes. Transitions between strokes at each turn are critical moments where races can be won or lost.
Format
Heats and semifinals select the 8 fastest swimmers for the final. The gold medal race covers 200 metres across all four strokes in sequence. The swimmer with the fastest total time wins, regardless of split performances in individual legs.
Nations to Watch
China and Japan dominate Individual Medley events across all distances at the Asian Games. South Korea, Kazakhstan, and Singapore have produced competitive IM swimmers. The versatility required means only the most complete swimmers can challenge for medals.
