About This Event
The 4×100m Medley Relay brings together specialists from all four strokes — backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle — in a single thrilling team event. The order of strokes is fixed: backstroke leads off, breaststroke second, butterfly third, and freestyle anchor. Nations typically deploy their best individual stroke specialists in each leg.
Format
Teams of 4 each swim a 100m leg in their specialist stroke (backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle in that order). Legal exchanges are required. Nations may also use different swimmers from those who competed in individual events, allowing squads to field their strongest possible combination.
Nations to Watch
China and Japan are the dominant forces in medley relay at the Asian Games, each with world-class specialists across all four strokes. South Korea, Singapore, and Kazakhstan also field competitive medley relay teams that regularly challenge for podium positions.
