About This Event
The Mixed 4×100m Medley Relay was introduced to the Asian Games programme to celebrate gender equality in sport. Two male and two female swimmers form each team, each swimming a 100-metre leg of their specialist stroke in the order backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle. The gender order within the relay is not fixed, giving coaches tactical flexibility.
Format
Teams of 4 (2 men and 2 women) each swim a 100m leg in the stroke order backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle. Nations may assign the gender to each stroke position as they choose, typically deploying whichever gender has the faster swimmer in each leg. Legal relay exchanges are required.
Nations to Watch
China and Japan benefit from having world-class swimmers of both genders across all strokes, making them perennial mixed relay powerhouses at the Asian Games.
