About This Event
The 100m Backstroke tests explosive speed in a technically demanding stroke. Swimmers start from in the water, launching off the wall on the starting signal and completing 2 lengths on their backs. Streamlined underwater dolphin kicks after the start and turn are critical to fast times, as is maintaining a high, consistent stroke rate throughout.
Format
Heats and semifinals select the 8 fastest women for the gold medal final. The swimmer completing 100 metres backstroke in the shortest time wins. Accurate flags above the pool help swimmers gauge distance to the wall without slowing their stroke.
