India’s women’s badminton team bowed out of the Asian Games 2026 quarterfinals with a 1-3 loss to hosts Japan on September 22 at Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium. The defeat ends India’s bid for a first women’s team medal since 2014.
PV Sindhu showed great resilience in the opening rubber, recovering from 13-17 down to win the first game 23-21 against world-class Akane Yamaguchi, but the Japanese ace levelled and dominated the decider to win 21-11. Unnati Hooda threw away a seven-point lead in the second game and was eliminated by Miyazaki.
World Championships bronze medallists Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand provided the lone bright spot, winning their doubles rubber 21-17, 21-16 to keep India alive briefly. However, youngster Tanvi Sharma could not match the experience of former World Champion Nozomi Okuhara in the must-win fourth rubber.
