Teqball made its Asian Games debut at Hangzhou 2022. The sport was invented in Hungary in 2012 and uses a curved table similar in concept to a ping-pong table, but played with a football using only the feet, head, chest, and thighs — hands are not allowed. It combines the technical demands of football’s juggling skills with the back-and-forth rally structure of table tennis.

How Teqball Is Played

Players score points when the opponent fails to return the ball within three touches, lets it bounce twice, uses the same body part three times consecutively, or handles it illegally. Matches are played to 12 points (singles and doubles), with a two-point advantage required to win a set. Three sets are played per match. Singles and doubles events are held for both men and women, meaning four events in total appear at the Asian Games.

The sport has spread quickly in Southeast Asia since its inclusion at Hangzhou. Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia have active teqball federations and produced the region’s strongest players at the 2022 Games. Teqball’s connection to football means footballing nations with strong freestyle and futsal traditions adapt to it quickly — which is why Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia have growing competitive rosters.
