Thailand Sepak Takraw at Asian Games 2026 – Team, Events & Title Defence
Thailand and Sepak Takraw
Sepak takraw is a sport indigenous to Southeast Asia, and Thailand has dominated it at the Asian Games longer than any other nation. The sport combines elements of football, volleyball, and gymnastics — players kick a rattan ball over a net without using their hands. Thailand’s athletes are known for their acrobatic roll spikes and overhead bicycle kicks that win points and crowds simultaneously.

Why Thailand Dominates
Thailand’s sepak takraw pipeline begins at the elementary school level. Regional competitions throughout the country feed into provincial and national championships, creating a selection depth that few Asian nations can match. Thai athletes also train year-round in dedicated national training centers. The Sport Authority of Thailand (SAT) funds the national team as one of its priority medal sports at the Asian Games.
Regional Rivals
Malaysia and Indonesia consistently challenge Thailand across sepak takraw events. Myanmar has produced competitive Regu teams. The Philippines and Vietnam have developed their programs and can challenge for bronze medals. South Korea is a newer but increasingly competitive presence, particularly in Double events. At Asian Games 2026, Thailand faces the most competition in Double formats where individual athlete skill plays a larger role than team chemistry.
How Scoring Works
Sepak takraw matches are played as best-of-three sets. Each set goes to 21 points, with a 2-point clear advantage required. In Regu format, three players (serving player and two attackers) rotate positions. Points are won by grounding the ball in the opponent’s half or forcing an error. The spike — executed as a bicycle kick, scissors kick, or roll spike — is the primary scoring move.
Thailand’s Medal Expectations
Thailand is expected to challenge for gold across multiple sepak takraw events at Asian Games 2026. Their depth in both men’s and women’s programs means they enter as favorites in Regu and Team events. Double events may be more competitive given Malaysia and Indonesia’s recent performances. Losing gold to Malaysia in Regu would be a significant result, but Thailand’s coaching staff and squad depth makes it the least likely outcome heading into Aichi-Nagoya.
