Triathlon has been part of the Asian Games programme since 2002 and is contested as individual and mixed relay events. The individual distance follows the Olympic triathlon format: 1.5km swim, 40km bike, and 10km run. Japan, South Korea, and China are consistently Asia’s strongest triathlon nations, with athletes placing regularly in ITU World Triathlon Series top-10 finishes.

Events at Asian Games 2026

Two events are contested at the Asian Games: men’s individual and women’s individual. The mixed relay — where teams of two men and two women each complete a shorter sprint triathlon leg — may also appear depending on OCA’s final programme. At Hangzhou 2023, Japan swept the men’s and women’s individual golds.

The Competition Format

Triathletes start with a mass swim in open water. After exiting the water, they enter transition, pick up their bikes, and complete the cycling leg. A second transition leads to the run. Athletes can draft (follow closely behind others) on the bike in Olympic and ITU-standard triathlon, which creates tactical racing rather than a simple time trial. The run typically determines the final result since the leaders reach it tightly bunched after tactical cycling.

Japan’s Depth

Japan’s triathlon infrastructure is exceptional by Asian standards. The Japan Triathlon Union has a professional coaching structure, significant prize money at domestic events, and a pipeline of athletes who begin competing at junior age-group world championships. Yuko Takahashi and Jumpei Furuya represent the current generation of top Japanese triathletes at senior level. South Korea’s athletes have closed the gap significantly since 2020, winning multiple Asian Championships.
