About This Event
Canoe Slalom (C1) is one of the most technically demanding disciplines in paddle sports. The paddler kneels in an open-cockpit canoe using a single-bladed paddle, navigating 18-25 gates on a challenging whitewater course. The kneeling position and single blade make upstream gate navigation particularly demanding, distinguishing C1 from kayak disciplines.
Format
Heats with two runs determine finalists. In the final, each paddler completes a single run. Time penalties for missed (50 seconds) or touched (2 seconds) gates are added to elapsed time. The athlete with the lowest combined time wins. Athletes may choose their own route between mandatory gates.
Nations to Watch
Japan, South Korea, and China lead men’s canoe slalom in Asia. The discipline requires specialised training facilities which limits depth in some nations, but emerging programmes in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are developing this sport with increasing success.
