Could the Asian Games Dates Change?

Yes, future cycle is subject to change. During the 108th Executive Board Meeting in Kuwait on 15th February 2026, the OCA unanimously approved a motion to modify the Asian Games cycle with the intention that the Games will be held one year in advance of the Olympic Games.

The decision allowed the OCA management to do coordination with Qatar and Saudi Arabia and said that:

  • The Doha 2030 Asian Games would shift to 2031
  • The Riyadh 2034 Asian Games would shift to 2035

Asian Games 2030: Doha, Qatar

In December 2020, Doha beat its competitor, Riyadh, thanks to the OCA National Olympic Committee’s vote and became the host city of the 21st Asian Games. Doha was previously the host city for Asian Games in 2006.

According to this current OCA public calendar, Doha has been set as the host city for 21st Asian Games in 2030.

However, the edition will be proposed to be shifted to 2031, due to the OCA’s cycle decision done during February 2026.

Asian Games 2034: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

However, after the selection of the 2030 edition, Riyadh was granted the 22nd edition of Asian Games. The OCA has confirmed that the host city is Riyadh and the host country is Saudi Arabia on its official Games page.

The Saudi capital’s choice is especially notable as the city has yet to host the Asian Games.

The current OCA calendar calls for the Riyadh Games in 2034 and the Executive Board decision from February 2026 calls for the relocation of the Games to 2035 in the new Games cycle.
