About This Event
Kata is the solo performance discipline of karate in which athletes execute a series of predefined fighting techniques against imaginary opponents. The routine is judged on technical performance (correct technique, timing, and focus) and athleticism (speed, power, and control). Athletes choose from an approved list of kata, and the higher the difficulty of the chosen kata, the higher the potential score.
Format
Preliminary rounds using a flag judging system narrow the field. In the final, athletes perform two rounds of kata with highest and lowest scores discarded. The athlete with the highest combined technical and athletic score wins gold. Ties are resolved by a deciding performance.
Nations to Watch
Japan is the dominant force in kata at the Asian Games, reflecting karate’s Japanese origins and the nation’s depth of elite practitioners. Iran, China, and South Korea also field strong kata competitors. The Gulf nations have invested in karate and regularly produce finalists in kata events.
