About This Event
The Women’s Triathlon features a 1500m open-water swim in Tokyo Bay, a 40km cycling leg through Tokyo roads, and a 10km running finish. Like the men’s event, the complete athlete — strong in all three disciplines and fast through transitions — typically prevails. The women’s field in Asia has grown rapidly in depth and competitiveness.
Format
Mass swim start with all athletes entering simultaneously. Transitions at T1 and T2 are timed and included in total race time. The first woman across the finish line of the final running stage wins gold. The race distance is standard Olympic-distance format.
Nations to Watch
Japan leads women’s triathlon in Asia with multiple Asian Games medallists. South Korea, China, and Hong Kong field competitive women triathletes. The sport’s growth in Southeast Asia has also added new nations to the competitive mix, with athletes from the Philippines and Thailand emerging as regional challengers.
