Sailing Asian Games

Sailing is a skilled and strategic activity that also involves knowledge of the wind. However, unlike the engine-powered sailor, sailors use the wind to steer their boats and to cover a set course as rapidly and economically as possible.

The Programme is divided into 6 Men’s Events, 6 Women’s Events & 2 Mixed Events as stated in the Notice of Race. The age restrictions for the boys, girls and youth mixed events are also applicable.

470 Mixed Dinghy

Mixed 470: 2-person sailing in a 470 class sailboat. It will be part of the two mixed events in the Asian Games 2026 sailing.

There are ten races in the (drafted) Notice of Race, and the scheduled racing time is Oct. 26 – 2 October.

Teamwork and tactics, boat handling, and such efficiency as using changing wind conditions optimally can be crucial in the 470 Class.

420 Youth Mixed Dinghy

The youth class in the programme is 420 Mixed Dinghy.

They will run for 12 races from 27th September to 3rd October 2026.

49er Men’s Skiff

It is the skiff event for the men that’s the 49er.

The event will be composed of 12 races and is scheduled from 26 September to 1 October.

Skiff racing can be very quick, and it is very technical. Sailors need to get in tune with each other, not only on speed but also with tactical opportunities, and adjust to wind changes.

The official Notice of Race also includes a new penalty for the skiff events, giving one turn instead of two for the conditions outlined in the event rules.

49erFX Women’s Skiff

This is the women’s skiff class of the Asian Games, the 49erFX.

It has its planned competition period between 26 September and 1 October 2026 (12 races).

It is a high-speed skiff discipline like the 49er in which accuracy of boat handling and crew communication are important.

29er Boys’ and Girls’ Skiff

The 29er is featured in the sailing programme of the Asian Games twice:

  • Boys’ Skiff
  • Girls’ Skiff

The events are both planned under the same dates and schedule – 26 Sep to 2 Oct 2026 with 12 races in total.

For the boys’ skiff and girls’ skiff, the Notice of Race indicates that the athlete(s) must be born in 2008 or later.

ILCA 7 Men’s Dinghy

The ILCA 7 is the men’s dinghy event.

The first event will be from 26 to 2 October, with a medal race coming next.

There is a special format difference in the ILCA 7 that is subjective — if 6 or more opening series races have been completed, then the top 10 boats advance to the medal race.

ILCA 6 Women’s Dinghy

The women’s dinghy event is ILCA 6.

It will take place between the 26th of September and the 2nd of October; then there will be a Medal Race.

Just like the men’s ILCA 7, the top 10 boats at the end of series 1 will then compete in series 2 — the medal race session — if a minimum of 10 races were reached.

With this format, it’s hardly difficult to see that the overall leader heading towards the medal race can’t just conclude that the competition is over. The last race will make a big difference.

ILCA 4 Boys’ and Girls’ Dinghy

The ILCA 4 is used for both:

  • Boys’ Dinghy
  • Girls’ Dinghy

The competitions will both take place from 27 September to 3 October 2026, with a planned 12 races.

According to the Notice of Race, boys’ and girls ‘ dinghy participants must not be born before 2009.

iQFOiL Windsurfing Events

The iQFOiL programme comprises a series of four events:

  • Men’s Windsurfing
  • Women’s Windsurfing
  • Boys’ Windsurfing
  • Girls’ Windsurfing

All four are scheduled for 29 September to 3 October 2026, with 20 planned races per event.

The iQFOiL events service as a contemporary module in the Asian Games sailing program and will offer some of the hottest water racing of the Games.

Medal Races at Sailing Asian Games 2026

There is to be a pair of medal races in the two sailing events.

  • Men’s Dinghy – ILCA 7
  • Women’s Dinghy – ILCA 6

The Notice of Race says the Medal Race format can only be used if 6 or more opening series races are conducted. The most successful of the 10 boats in each of these two heats then go on to the medal race.
