SEA Games 2027: Malaysia plans 43 sports and about 492 events, final list due soon
Malaysia’s organisers are planning about 492 events across 43 sports for the 2027 SEA Games, with the final list expected by the end of October or early November 2026. The Games run from 18 to 29 September 2027 across Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Penang and Johor.
Datuk Abdul Rashid Yaakub, chief executive of the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC), told Bernama that the number of events per sport depends on finishing the technical handbooks, which he expected to take two to three weeks.
Key numbers
- Sports: about 43 (up from 38 in the preliminary list of December 2025)
- Events: about 492, not yet final
- Athletes: an estimated 7,000 to 8,000
- Accommodation: three-star or better hotels near venues, rather than a single athletes’ village
Volunteers wanted from 5 December
A volunteer drive for both the SEA Games and the ASEAN Para Games opens on 5 December 2026. Organisers want about 14,000 volunteers for the SEA Games and a further 5,000 for the ASEAN Para Games, which take place in Kuala Lumpur from 17 to 23 October 2027. Applicants from overseas are welcome, particularly international students who speak the languages of competing nations.
